Little-known special corners of the Costa Brava, Begur and Palamós

The Costa Brava, a well-known region of Catalonia but with many places to explore that you probably didn’t know before reading this article.

Moll Company we are a family business located in Palamós and we want to introduce you to a few little-known places that we recommend through the opinion of local people like us.

Palamós

Did you know that Palamós is not only a summer town? Throughout the year you can enjoy its quiet coves and gastronomy.

If you go into the forest after Castell beach you will find the Dalí hut, you can’t visit it from the inside but from the outside you will be very surprised and you will definitely want to take a souvenir photo with it.

A curiosity of Palamós is that it has 2 constructions made by Mr. Eiffel, the same one who built the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Where can you find these builds? The La Gamba restaurant of Palamós and the Mas Gorgoll bridge.

Which beaches do we recommend?

Cala d’Alguer is a place to take photos with your partner, wedding photos, with friends, without forgetting that the best time of the day is when the sun is already going down.

Do you know Cala Foradada?

Its name honors the hole in the rock that it has and that you can go through with the kayak you have rented at Castell beach or you can go through it by swimming. Inside the perforated rock you can see sea tomatoes, starfish, and fish from the Mediterranean Sea.

Castell beach ideal for coming with children and being able to play with the fine sand. In the summer there is a bar and a kayak rental establishment, highly recommended for a 2-hour excursion to S’Alguer or to Cala Estreta. The parking is paid from May until the end of the summer, in order to regulate the use of the beach and keep the natural space preserved.

And the gastronomy of Palamós?

The main dish if you are not a vegetarian is the Gamba of Palamós , with its own trademark, you will find a large number of restaurants that make dishes with fresh prawn. You can find rice with Palamós prawns, Palamós prawn carpaccio, grilled or grilled Palamós prawns.
Remember that you can buy fresh prawns all year round except for the months of January and February as this is when the fishermen close for two months to regenerate the seabed.

What is the main festival in Palamós?

We couldn’t choose just one but two. To start the year in high spirits, the biggest winter festival is undoubtedly the Palamós Carnival, this 2024 it is from February 3 to 14.

In summer, the main festival happens during Sant Joan, from June 23 to 26. The only town on the Costa Brava that hosts the concerts on the beach. In addition, there is the fair on the beach and many other activities to enjoy.

Begur

The town of Begur is well-known for its beautiful beaches, but have you ever taken a quiet walk through the town?

In Carrer de Santa Reparada you will find colorfully painted stairs with a lot of charm that have been known thanks to Instagram. In addition to finding many medieval houses with the traditional stone of the Costa Brava.

A very beautiful and characteristic street is Pi i Ralló, with views of the Begur castle, with Cuban bars and ice cream corners. You can walk to the castle where you will enjoy views of the sea and the Medes Islands.

And in the summer, which beaches do we recommend?

All the beaches can be accessed by car, but keep in mind that during the summer there is a charge for parking. On the weekends in July and August the beaches are very crowded, you need to go there early or come in the months of June or September.

Sa Riera beach is highly recommended because it is large, with fine sand, you can snorkel there and there are a few restaurants for lunch.

If you want a smaller beach you have to go to Sa Tuna, it also has restaurants. The Camí de Ronda goes along the entire coast of Begur so you can see more than one cove in the same day without having to take the car.

Remember that because of the lack of water could be that the showers on the beaches are closed to the public.

Begur’s gastronomy

In Begur they don’t have their own brand but you can find restaurants that offer zero kilometer food products. We all know that the Mediterranean diet is very enviable in many countries, but in Begur you will also find restaurants dedicated to Cuban cuisine, honoring the history of the Begur Indians.

What is the main festival in Begur?

Undoubtedly the star party of the town of Begur is the Indian Fair. The town celebrates the fair during the first weekend of September, from 6 to 8 September 2024.

The fair commemorates the Catalans who emigrate to Cuba in search of fortune. When they returned they not only brought fortune but brought Cuban influence. Both in terms of cultural traditions and architecture. You can see it with the majestic houses in the center of the town. You cannot miss the Fair!
